Generating a Healthy Personality
Please visit > Goals of TA and Daily Affirmations before reading further

Persons with a healthy personality are responsive to stimuli. They are free of the four redefining engagements. They are:
  1. Passive Behaviours and Thinking Disorders;
  2. Redefining Transactions;
  3. Parent and Child competitive symbiosis;
  4. Moving to operate from roles on Drama Triangle;
They are free of the impulse to engage in Games.

They are free of being jump-started* by spontaneous script-takeovers.

They actively engage themselves in:
  1. Replacing racket feelings by authentic feelings;
  2. Replacing Emotion Rackets by healthy emotions and 'allow emotion rackets to age in dust on the shelves of closed shops';
  3. Creating the moment, entering the moment and actively using the moment to be free of mind talk, and emotional lock-jams;
  4. Harbouring good thoughts and feelings about themselves, others and generally about the quality of life they live;
  5. Disregarding the commands of Injunctions, Drivers and Scripty Impulses;
They function with an empowered Adult. The empowered Adult in time takes over the task of perception, evaluation, assessment and response to stimuli, with Permissive Parent and Acquiescent Child support. It is also able to store new experiences. The person, now possessing such a healthy personality, operates from an Empowered Adult. The Adult function is as shown in the diagram that appears below:

The person is then able to use the Reality Principle and Reality Testing routinely. The person is free of engaging in games and therefore is able to successfully implement Social Control ultimately earning the capacity to live a script free life.

Group 6 Goals Explained
Good Mental Health and Psychological Well Being

These are indicators about a person having good mental health and psychological well being.

Response to stimuli. These are sane, safe, appropriate and effective. They help to end the situation, solve the problem, overcome the difficulty, tide over the condition, face the challenge and, accept the existence of a conflict and move to resolve it.

Having capacity for decision making.

Able to deal with confusion, indecision, struggle, dilemmas and impasses.

Able to end emotional lock-jams.

Able to deal with racket feelings in lieu of authentic feelings.

Capacity to generate the moment and be in the moment. Also to bringing mind where the body is or in the ongoing activity.

Level, honest, open interactions with others in intimacy.

Having awareness about use of crossed transactions and tangential transactions during interactions with others.

Having awareness about racket actions, behaviour and expressions being the con for engaging others in games.

Being topic centric. Communication is free of driver influence. Click here for Drivers and Driver influenced Communication types.

Being at ease when alone and equally at ease being in the company of others.

Having capacity for conscious awareness.

No compulsion to play games or engage in rackets.

Having awareness about our movement to persecutor, rescuer, victim or manipulator game roles.

Having good Social Control.

Freedom from justifying, protecting and professing one's point of view as being the only correct or right view.

Freedom from being stubborn, blaming, giving back, pointing mistakes, expecting and anticipating, anxiety and distress, tunnel vision, passivity, passive behaviours, grandiosity, locked in driver behaviours.

Having awareness about the need to be disciplined, cordial, accepting and accommodating in interactions with others in close relationships - siblings, children, spouse, friends, neighbours, and also in other places - social settings, clubs, meetings and discussion forums. Catching the mischievous behaviour of another is itself being mischievous.

Having awareness about the many modes of rackety displays elaborated in the script system. For details click here Script System.

Having awareness about movement to not-OK Miniscript positions. For details click here Miniscript.

Having awareness about occupying one of three unhealthy Life Positions. For Life Positions click here Life Positions.

Having awareness about Redefining Transactions. For redefining transactions click here Frame of Reference and Redefining.

Having awareness about our tendency to engage in competitive symbiosis. Competitive Symbiosis - In competitive symbiosis two persons haggle with each other for the same dominant role.

Ending Unproductive Mind Talk

Ending unproductive mind talk is being free of a chattering mind. Eric Berne says that when one is humming a song in the mind there is a tune to which he is singing. Similarly it may be said that there is a topic in the mind space that gets us to engage in mind talk. There is only a difference in the level of insanity of persons who chat in their mind and those who speak loudly or even shout about it on the street or in public places.

Discarding Trash

Discarding Trash is consciously being aware about our many types of dysfunctional behaviours. The significant ones being inability to differentiate person from behaviour, drivers, passive behaviours, thinking disorders, crossed and redefining transactions, competitive symbiotic relating, inability to deal with urges, drives and impulses, moving to unhealthy life positions or roles on not-ok mini-script or roles on drama triangle, or being engaged in any one of the rackety displays mentioned in the script system.

Being an Accepting, Loving, Liking Person

Coming to acquire healthy qualities of an active Free Child and Permissive Parent.

Being Happy and Joyful in a childlike way

This is possible when the Free Child is released.

Group 5 Goals Explained
Heightened Awareness

Having Conscious Awareness about a thought, feeling, emotion, mind talk, lock-jam, sensation opens the door to deal with it in the here now.

It helps to understand these terms:

Being Conscious: Being connected to a sensation, thought, feeling, emotion, mind talk, lock-jam in the moment.

Being Aware: Consciously getting to know that the aforementioned things do exist in reality in the moment.

Being consciously aware: An active process of generating awareness.

Having conscious awareness: Having awareness consciously. This is the most valuable quality to possess.

It helps to be consciously aware of the various types of processes that are going on in the mind all the time. These are lock-jams with thoughts about a person, event, incident, action, response or reaction. These are rackets if we are unable to get rid of them and they keep coming to mind again and again in a variety of situations. They are feelings of hurt, pain, embarrassment, insult, isolation, ego hurt, guilt etc. They are also in the nature of blaming the other/s or blaming oneself or feeling of hurt or pain or guilt or embarrassment.

It helps to be consciously aware about the nature of communications that are happening between ourself / us and another / others. Are they proceeding with the topic that they started with or have they shifted to another topic or have they shifted from topic to person / persons. Attributing meaning unawarely converts conversation into a game. We need to take it in hand and roll back to the initial topic. Trains of topics gradually move away from the initial topic. This too is a gamy trend. It is a game when we are justifying / protecting / professing our own view and conclusion.

Having conscious awareness helps us to implement the process of separating person from behaviour. This by knowing that person is lovable and acceptable while behaviour is to be overlooked or ignored. This is because behaviour is a manifestation of personality at the moment.

Conscious awareness about the four types of passive behaviours helps. The more obvious are agitation and incapacitation. Being agitated about something that has happened or likely to happen reveals this passive behaviour. Finger tapping, legs wriggling, pacing and worrying are other signs of agitation. Forecasting, predicting, expecting, anticipating, anxiety and distress come in this category. A thinking - feeling / emotional lock-jam with this is a racket. In incapacitation our mind is occupied in planning to hurt oneself or hurt another or experiencing extreme futility. Depression, Guilt, Hatred, Resentment, Animosity, Distress, Grief, are varieties of this futility for long left unresolved. Their milder versions are Hurt, Pain, Insult, Anxiety and Bias.

Conscious awareness about mythical thinking helps to deal with it. Mythical thinking is in the nature of day dreaming while talking to oneself about a person, event, happening, interaction, behaviour, mistake, wrongdoing or other similar spinning multiple outcomes or results by way of forecasting.

Conscious awareness about psychological time engagements and transactional rackets. Psychological time engagement is manifest by being out of touch with the here now. It could be about the past or about something in the future. Our mind, our attention, our presence is elsewhere. Our mind is not where the body is or in the matter we are dealing with in the present moment.

Conscious awareness also helps to know when we are justifying, protecting, professing or experiencing helplessness. They are sure shot signs of being in script. This process is accompanied by Procrustes or Unicorn or Circularity. Procrustes is manifest when we enlarge or cut out parts of reasoning to fit our proposition. Unicorn is when we enlarge or cut parts of our proposition to include the matter. In circularity one finds all the reasons put forth are the only ones that are right and correct. Conscious awareness about we blaming, attributing, not shouldering ownership or responsibility helps us to know that we have become script ridden. Conscious awareness about planning to harm another or harming oneself or taking positions in the matter of a subject help us to know that we have become script ridden. Conscious awareness about our tendency to manipulate another or give back helps us to know that we have become script ridden.

Drivers and Injunctions. All of us are in driver and / injunction at some time or another. Having conscious awareness about our being in these two helps us to do something about them.

Confusion, indecision and struggle, and being in dilemma and impasse are signs of being pathology ridden. We can then do something about them by having conscious awareness about them.

One of the goals of Transactional Analysis practice is to have the most healthy relationship between the affective (feeling) and cognitive (thinking) aspects of personality. Either of them in excess is indicative that good mental health is affected.

The object of good interacting and response is to end situations sanely, safely, effectively and reasonably. If we are unable to do this means that urge, drive, desire, impulsiveness are pushing us. Conscious awareness helps us to patiently wait, delay and postpone the response.

Having Consciousness: Having enough learning and experience to have a heightened conscious awareness for persons, things, events, happenings the moment they happen or occur in our environment.

Group 4 Goals

Capacity to be Loving

Loving means to be accepting and appreciating; being kind, considerate and affectionate; being helping, assisting and caring; it also means having capacity for intimacy without threat or put-downs. Loving is also expressed by not holding on to unpleasant feelings about another.

Being Loving is also marked by being free of expecting and having capacity for a dialectical approach. Dialectical means the ability to see from the other person's point of view.

Capacity to be Friendly

Being friendly is marked by being kind, caring, helping, forgiving and forgetting.

Being friendly is also marked by being other person accepting and overlooking the defects and shortcomings in the other.

Forgiving

A forgiving person is able to separate person from behaviour. The person is aware that forgiving has nothing to do with another. It has everything to do with oneself. Forgiving is becoming free of consuming poison in the the hope that another will suffer. With this a forgiving person is able to let go.

Hermann Hess has written in his novel Siddharth that the accomplished is he who is able to put his foot again and again in the same river to find that the river is new every single time.

Forgetting

Forgetting is the art of deliberately working to freeing our mind from lock-jams about events, persons, happenings and experiences.

Discarding

Discarding is the art of throwing away into dustbin a thought, feeling, emotion, happening, experience that is bothering and generating a lock-jam in the mind.

The process of conducting practices to become loving, friendly, forgiving, forgetting and discarding is covered in a section of 09.12. Click here > 09.12 Loving, Forgiving, Forgetting and Discarding if you wish to see it right away.

Group 3 Goals

Effective Social Control
Social Control is the capacity in a person to resist the manipulation by another or other/s, and also resist the urge to manipulate another, or other/s.

Using Reality Principle
Reality Principle is the guiding principle which gets an individual to attempt to judge beforehand the consequences of various courses of actions. This as opposed to responding driven by urge, drive or impulse.

Using Adult Reality Testing
Reality Testing is a specific function of Adult ego state and not an isolated faculty (of brain). Reality testing helps a person to update, validate and store experiences with new meaning and understanding. It helps to respond to the world based on Adult data and evaluations of reality instead of on borrowed frames of Parent and outdated, archaic frames of the Child. Simply put Reality Testing is the ability in a person to test subjective appraisals of reality on the touchstone of objective here - now reality.

Acquiescent Free Child
An acquiescent Free Child helps a person to enjoy life and be happy in a childlike way. The Child is the storehouse and controller of psychic energy. By having a Free Child, the person becomes empowered to gain relief from the battering by the Punitive Parent. Not only that, it helps to treat the Parent and install a Permissive Parent. Acquiescence means reluctantly agreeing. The manner in which the Adult deals with reality is not to the liking of the Child. It however keeps itself away from interfering with the Adult in this enterprise. Therefore the Adult is able to evaluate and deal with reality and respond using age appropriate Adult capacities.

Installing a Permissive Parent
A Permissive Parent is endocrinologically programmed. In its role as a Controlling Parent it functions to provide safety, security, encouraging with trust and self-reliance, supportive of growth and respecting the child's endeavours as being driven by developmental needs and tasks. In its role as a Nurturing Parent it is loving, caring, helping, teaching and supporting growth.

Empowered Adult
An empowered Adult is free of pathology. It has capacity to generate multi views. Its hallmark is the ability to patiently wait, delay and postpone responses to urges, drives and impulses. It is the source of evaluated and mature responses to reality. It helps in ending situations sanely, safely and effectively. It is able to conduct reality testing.

An empowered Adult has capacity for conscious awareness. It is thus able to push autonomous responses originating in the lower brain through the mid-brain to the fore-brain. Such an Adult not only empowers itself further, it also gives itself the capacity to store new experiences. These experiences help in later times to make realistic appraisals, evaluations and assessments of reality.

Being free of Submission to Script
Awareness is the key. Being aware of justifying, protecting and promoting is the peep-hole to knowing. Being aware of our own tendency to use naming, attributions and harbouring bias, reveals movement to script. Movement to script takes place with redefining. Redefining is marked by Passive Behaviours, Redefining Transactions, Competitive Symbiosis and movement to Drama Triangle Roles. Movement to Script is also marked by signs of Rackety Behaviours and escalation of somatic ailments. Awareness about movement to one of three unhealthy life positions, or one of three not-OK Miniscript positions, or one of three Drama Triangle positions, or manifestation of Passive Behaviours or becoming Driver compliant reveals movement to script.

Being free of Submission to Script is an art of using the moment without planning. Berne says that the key to freedom from movement to script is walking out of the games we play. Fr. George recommends installing positive aspects of personality. I recommend generating a healthy personality by installing a permissive Parent and an acquiescent Free Child alongside empowering the Adult.

Discarding Racket Feelings

We hold on to feelings of hurt, pain, insult, isolation, ego hurt, embarrassment, guilt, sadness, frustration, anxiety, distress, dislike, hate and  many other feelings. These feelings affect our mind. There are ways to relieve our mind of racket and emotional lock-jams. These are covered later on.

TA Theory and Practice: Spare 1

Implementing Practice 1

We begin with closure of escape hatches by making this self contract. No matter what happens I will never ever harm myself, or harm another, or cause material damage, or go crazy. This constitutes the first step.

The second step is to implement the three philosophical assumptions of TA. They are:
  1. People are OK
  2. People can Think
  3. People can make new decisions to change the course of their lives.
People are OK: This is an assertion. We all have the capacity for Respect, Regard, Acceptance and Esteem. The permissions to experience these are capped. It is a flip-flop act. Realisation is the key.

People can Think: Our capacity to think is capped because of psycho-pathology. Confusion, indecision, struggle and conflict are its obvious manifestations. They are shown in the figure below.
Figure for showing
Confusion, Indecision, Struggle and Conflict
We need to distinguish between situation, problem, difficulty, challenge and conflict. We also need to know what to do when we face them. Here are the actions to take:
  • Situation - end the situation;
  • Problem - solve the problem;
  • Difficulty - overcome the difficulty;
  • Challenge - face the challenge;
  • Conflict - Accept its existence, take a step back and resolve it;
Feelings cap our capacity to think. Feelings are sensations. They are similar to traffic signals. Each of them has a specific action plan.
  • Feeling Sad - share it with someone;
  • Feeling Angry - use the Non Violent Communication Method;
  • Feeling Fear - accept what is feared to be coming true and prepare for it;
[Non Violent Communication Method: It is accomplished in four steps.]
  1. Report the observation; (You are using bad language);
  2. Communicate the feeling; (I am not liking it);
  3. Communicate the need; (I like you, speaking without using bad language);
  4. Make a request: (Please speak without using bad language);
The wheel of feelings and related emotions is a good tool to know the emotions associated with a given feeling.

As examples: When we feel hate or resentment, we can conclude that the associated feeling is anger. We can discharge it by using Non Violent Communication method. Similarly, when we feel ignored or guilty, we can conclude that the associated feeling is sad. We can share the feeling to discharge it. When we feel frightened or anxious, we can be prepared for the possibility of the event we fear, expect or anticipate happening for real. We generate an action plan. Our preparedness gives us a sense of relief (in fact we do not feel the same anxiety again because we are now ready for the event) when it shows up again.

The operation of the injunction 'don't think' may also cap this capacity. To know more click here. Other injunctions may also contribute in this regard. They are don't grow up, don't be you and  don't be successful.

People can make new decisions to change the course of their lives:

Script retains its homeostasis and poses an inertia. Therefore any action with regard to script needs to be made supervised by a trained professional.

There are a few ways of dealing with script decisions made in childhood. These are decisions that have set up our life leading to its script payoff. We can deal with them in manner most suitable.

Script requires (1) Parental directives (2) A suitable personality development (3) A childhood decision (4)  A real turn-on a particular method of success or failure, and (5) A convincing attitude. *Berne in What Do You Say After You Say Hello. The easiest of these is to work on personality constituents. Uncovering a childhood decision takes time. However, once revealed they are the most effective in overcoming script control.

Script can by healed by running a six stage script healing process developed by the author. A person goes 'down' to the thinking and feeling associated with the script decision. Any thought can be used for doing this. Hold in mind the prevailing thought. Now start the process. Note the associated feeling, then the associated emotion, then the associated somatic sensation, and finally the related script thinking and script feeling feeling associated with the relevant script decision. Now work upward with six steps of healing. Please click here to reach the relevant blog under Transformational Transactional Analysis.

Script denies liberties and permissions to the person affected by it. The denying factors act like a wall which the person affected finds difficult to break through. This itself is a belief. It is a mythical belief. The person can act once he understands the nature of mythical beliefs.
