Ego State Diagnosis

Purpose of Diagnosis: Diagnosis aids in identifying the active ego state of a client's therapeutic condition. Diagnosis aids in journeying the client through stages of therapy tactfully. There are four stages of diagnosis.
Behavioural Diagnosis: This is called operational diagnosis. It is done by looking for clues. They are verbal and non verbal clues. Verbal clues are words related - words, sentence structures, stress, redundants and curse words; tone related - volume, tone, stress and diction. Non-verbal clues - facial expressions made by lips, cheeks, wrinkles on forehead, raised eyebrows, smiles and frowns; head slants, nods and other movements; body postures, swings and pose; gestures by hands, arms and legs; crossed arms and legs. The descriptive aspects of functional ego states help to identify which functional ego state is active. Berne prescribes 'think sphincter' to intuit the client's ego state in the moment.
Social Diagnosis: This is called transactional diagnosis. It is done by looking at the identificatory clues in the respondent. For example: parents typically come from their Parent ego state in interactions between parents and children. Their son or daughter usually responds from its Child ego state. Therefore, by observing clues in the son or daughter we can derive the ego state in the parent.
Historical Diagnosis: This is done by looking back at. When was the experience first registered or remembered to have happened. In what ways does it correspond to the current experience. The person states a few past experiences, setting a background which provides clues.
Phenomenological Diagnosis: This is called experiential diagnosis. It is done by looking into experience first hand. Today I am experiencing a put down. It is similar to standing in front of my dad in wet pants, being admonished for falling on the road and hurting myself. Phenomenology enables a person to experience his / her ego state whole from a recall. Phenomenological Diagnosis aids in identifying where from the symptom originated. The argumentative nature of a person can be traced back to his / her G. G. Father who was a sucessful laywer. It was lodged in the person's Parent. Phenomenological diagnosis confirms diagnosis afforded by other types of diagnosis. It helps to conclude the diagnosis.
