TA Energy Theory
Energy theory is used to explain motivation, neurosis, psychosis, pathologies and the experience of moving self.

Ego states are activated in response to external and internal stimuli by release of psychic energy (referred to as Cathexis).  Cathexis is in three states - bound, unbound and free cathexis. Bound cathexis is stored cathexis. It gets converted to unbound cathexis and free cathexis. Energetic people have ample quantity of bound cathexis stored in the ego state system. Unbound cathexis represents released energy in the ego states. Unbound cathexis is uniformly distributed across the three ego states as a default condition when we are at ease. The distribution of unbound cathexis in the ego state system becomes imbalanced when we respond to stimuli. This occurs because the unbound cathexis in two ego states gets converted to bound cathexis. Thereby unbound cathexis in one ego state is more than in the other two ego states. The origin of free cathexis is not clearly explained in TA literature. I assume its origin is in bound cathexis. This presumption is validated by our dreams. The self moves through the three ego states in our dreaming state without the unbound cathexis being present in any of the them. Free cathexis affords us the 'sense of self'. It affords us a conscious view of reality in the prevailing moment.

An example: Seilo happened to recall yesterday's conversation with his friend Recco, and noticed that he had behaved inappropriately. He justified it then. When Seilo spoke to Recco, his Self was in the same ego state as the active ego state - the Parent. Today when he is reflecting, his Self is in the Adult whereas the recorded memory of yesterday is in the Parent. He reflects: I engaged in inappropriate behaviour yesterday, however, I was not aware about it then.

The ego state boundary is postulated to be selectively permeable. It permits only free cathexis to flow through. Therefore, bound and unbound cathexis remain confined to the ego state in which they are located.

The sum total of unbound cathexis and free cathexis in an ego state constitutes active cathexis. The ego state in which active cathexis is predominantly present is vested with executive power. It is said to be in the executive. The person's behaviour corresponds to that ego state. The ego state in which active cathexis is very little or not at all is an excluded ego state. Similarly if there is one ego state with all or almost all the active cathexis it is the constant ego state or excluding ego state. The ego state having the maximum free cathexis is experienced as Self.

If both Self and Executive are in the same ego state that ego state is ego syntonic. A person can be Parent ego syntonic, Adult ego syntonic or Child ego syntonic. If Self and Executive are in separate ego states, the ego state in which the Self is, is ego dystonic and the ego state which is in the executive, is ego syntonic. A person experiences discomfort when he / she is Adult / Parent / Child ego dystonic.

In the example if Seilo had become conscious of his inappropriate behaviour upon Recco bringing it to his notice or on his own, he would have become Adult ego dystonic and Parent ego syntonic. He would then have expressed his helplessness in implementing change. To the contrary if he was Parent ego syntonic he would have justified his behaviour as being appropriate, even necessary.

Energy theory is useful in explaining reactions to stimuli. Reaction will be escalated if conversion from bound to unbound cathexis is quick. If the conversion is slow, the person will be sluggish in responding to stimuli. We find some people are very slow in becoming morally or ethically active or, morally or ethically accommodating. Some people are slow to grasp and understand. In such people the conversion of bound cathexis to unbound cathexis in the Adult may be slow. Some people show little or no desire to participate in fun. Bound cathexis in the Child converts to unbound cathexis slowly in these people and that too if at all it does.
