Deeper understanding of transactions
Transactions may appear to be complementary between structural ego states and turn out to be crossed between functional ego states.
CP > AC may be responded by FC > NP.
Ajay now sit and complete your answer.
Can I join you mom, and sit by your side.
At structural level  P > C is responded by C > P so it is a complementary transaction. However at functional level CP > AC is responded by FC > NP, so it is a complementary transaction. However, its outcome may not baffle the parties. However its outcome is unexpected if the functional ego states in the same example are different. NP > FC responded by AC > CP.
Ajay, come dear and do your work sitting by my side. NP > FC
Mom. OK I will come if you insist.  AC > CP
Mom is surprised because the outcome is unexpected. It is mapped in the diagram in figure 52.
