Special Types of Strokes
There are three types of special strokes. They are marsh mallows, counterfeit strokes and filtered strokes.
Marshmallows - These are obviously insincere. Saying something to another without it being true in the least, are marshmallows. Some marshmallows get included in filtered stroke category.
An example: "Good Morning Sir, you look so fresh. It seems you had a good night's sleep despite last night being so hot and humid." The fact is that the person is very tired and somehow keeping his head focused on work.
Counterfeit Strokes - These are pleasant statements carrying pain, hurt or something like a 'sting'.
An example: "Hi young man I see you wearing this branded 'Alligator' Tee Shirt. It looks really good on you. When I was in Thailand we used to export loads of these to India for the grey market." Fact was that the person had paid quite a sum for the shirt in a branded shop. He felt humiliated.
Filtered Strokes - Some filtered strokes are marshmallow type strokes. An example will explain. You study for long hours. (He obviously does not.) I pray and hope that you pass in the exam.

Filtering or distortion of strokes may be be carried out by the receiver. A well meaning statement is taken by the other in a distorted sense. An example: "Thank you Sir for your help. It made our task easy to implement." What the person hearing this says to himself is quite different. It is this: "There are many persons around who keep praising others for the sake of taking advantage later on." This although what he was told was genuine truth.
