  Rules of Communication
We can  conclude the types of communications that result from them by observing the nature of transactions. Some authors call them rules of communication.
Complementary transactions generate a congenial environment of discussion. Therefore it follows that 'as long as transactions remain complementary, communication can continue indefinitely.' This is the first rule of communication.
Crossed transactions generate a break in communication. At times a lull follows because the other party gets an unexpected reply. Therefore it follows that 'when transaction is crossed, a break in communication results. Communication can be restored when one or both parties shift their ego states' and attempting again setting aside the earlier outcome. This is the second rule of communication.
Ulterior transactions carry hidden content. Parties that are prone to play games usually engage in such transactions.  The contents of the psychological content generate the behavioural outcome. Therefore it follows that 'the behavioural outcome of ulterior transactions is determined by contents of the psychological message and not of the social message.' This is the third rule of communication.
