Transactional Analysis is a unified system of individual and social psychiatry. Here individual psychiatry means the study and treatment of mental illnesses, emotional disturbances and dysfunctional behaviours. Social psychiatry means the study of psychiatric aspects of transactions (interactions) that take place between two or more individuals at a given time and place.
Transactional Analysis is a theory of social action. Social Action means acts implying recognition of the presence of other persons. TA identifies strokes, transactions, games, scripts and various elements of time structuring as a means that people use to effect social action.
Transactional Analysis is a theory that affords social control. Social Control means the capacity in a person to control his or her own tendency to manipulate other people in destructive or wasteful ways. It also means the ability people have to overcome their tendency to respond to the manipulation of others without insight and option. Social Control gifts its possessors the capacity to hear to dialogues (in their head) between personality components. It also gifts one to be aware of the onset and content of the incessant mind talk.
Transactional Analysis is a theory that helps people to exercise the reality principle. Reality Principle represents a skill possessed by people who excel in observing and learning to control three groups of forces: themselves, other people and nature. Reality principle is also a guiding principle which leads an individual to attempt to judge beforehand the consequences of various courses of action, instead of acting immediately in accordance with the Id tensions of the moment.
Transactional Analysis is a theory that fosters reality testing. Berne asserts that reality testing is not a function of the brain. It is the function of distinct ego states - the Adult ego states. Reality testing means the ability, the skill of checking out perceived reality on the touchstone of objective reality.
Transactional Analysis affords developing and building a healthy personality. The hallmarks of a healthy personality are an Acquiescent Free Child, a Permissive Parent and an Empowered Adult.
Transactional Analysis theory helps people to be happy, loving, responsible and growing. Growth in transactional analysis is represented by the force of physis integrating the positive aspects of the three ego states. As a result people are able to recover their hidden potential to grow psychologically, emotionally and spiritually as persons. Growth is a drive to wholeness.
Transactional Analysis theory asserts esteem for self responsibility. Esteem means pride and admiration without egotism. Transactional Analysis practice helps us to admit our mistakes and work to be free of them. More importantly not to hold others responsible for the mistakes we have committed, or are prone to commit. Transactional analysis also asks us to assume responsibility for personal change, personal growth, and personal and professional development. We learn in TA that we are born to live a life of a prince. Parenting converts us into frogs. Self responsibility means not to become reconciled to the life we live. It means that no matter how we have been brought up or how we think we were brought up, we can do things to put matters right and live life in rewarding ways.
